Grade Four students enjoyed many games this Fall which helped them to review both rhythms and notes on the Treble Staff. In November, all students have either found recorders from Grade Three or purchased new ones and we are working to develop a good tone as well as to read music.
Students need to bring recorders each week to Music Class:
Please help your student to remember to bring recorders each week to Music class. I suggest that students have recorders "live in their backpack" when they are not practicing to insure that they are handy each week for Music class. Classroom teachers also ask students to include remembering recorders as part of nightly homework in agenda books. Packing a recorder the night before is best as mornings can be a hectic time. Thank you in advance for your help with this essential preparation for class!
Recorder Practice:
As with any musical instrument, practice is essential to progress. I ask all Grade Four students to practice recorders a minimum of 5-10 minutes four nights weekly. Students should be focusing on a good tone. Gentle breath, not blowing is what is needed for a good sound on recorder. Covering holes completely is the other essential part of playing recorder. Finger pads should cover holes with the flat part of the finger, not the fingertip. Squeaking and screeching sounds are caused by:
1) Overblowing /too much air or 2) Not covering holes completely with fingertips.
Practice "Bugs" or practice records have gone home with students and are available in class.
Each "bug" has a segment that needs to be signed with a parent's initial and then each bug is
is signed by the parent as well. When students have filled out two "bugs", they are eligible for a
prize from the Music Room.
I am available on Thursdays at lunch recess to work with any student who has questions or needs extra help.
Save the Date: Grade Four Recorder Concert on Wednesday, June 7, 2017 at 1:45 p.m.
in the Crisafulli Cafe. We hope to see you there!

Thanks so much for your help!
